Points of Unity

Our Purpose as a Community Coalition

We are the 50th Chicano Moratorium Organizing Committee, formed in a joint effort of various individuals, organizations, and supporters in coalition. We are advancing the history and legacy of both the times, and the responses of the greater Chicano/Raza population to the conditions that led up to August 29, 1970. Currently we are continuing the fight for peace, liberation and educating about this iconic event with the understanding we will move beyond the limitations of our past. Women are leading and contributing in this committee and breaking from norms of patriarchy. The following are the “Points of Unity” which we have drafted together, which must be accepted and embodied while organizing and leading the 50th Chicano Moratorium.

Respect One Another

This committee will move forward united by respecting the decisions we make together. Learning from our past, we resolve to unite with women, African Americans, indigenous/Natives, Asian Americans, LGBTQ, the youth, our elders, veterans, labor unions, refugees, immigrants, the disabled, and all other oppressed people.

Historical Accuracy

We recognize the original demands of the Chicano moratoriums and expand our demands to include the following:

  • Self-determination and the liberation of women.

  • Pro-Peace & Ending Chicano military drafting into wars like Vietnam.

  • Stopping U.S. military intervention & cutting the military budget.

  • Ending racism & police killings/crimes.

  • Proper access to bilingual and quality public education.

  • Equality for all, good jobs and access to health care.

  • Increased benefits for veterans and the elderly.

  • Housing rights.

  • Political representation.

  • Legalization for all and fair and humane immigration laws.

  • Environmental justice & support for the “New Green Deal.”

  • Solidarity with all oppressed nations of the world.

  • Stop the Trump administration policies, ending white supremacy, and the privatization of public and social services.

Financial Transpaency

The report of all money used for any event will be accessible to the entire committee. Additionally, the task of money and logistics will operate through the finance committee. All expenses must have pre- approval by the committee. Reimbursements given upon proof of receipt by the committee. The finance committee is responsible for preparing the budget, for full committee review, and approval. The budget finance/fundraising committee is authorized to make expenditures of a petty cash nature and to not exceed $300.
