STATEMENT OF THE 50TH CHICANO MORATORIUM COMMITTEE TRIBUTE TO TIERRA IN MEMORY

On this 52nd year of commemorating the August 29, 1970 mass anti-war protest in E.L.A., and the popular advancement of the Chicano civil rights movement in the southwest U.S.A., we of the 50th Chicano Moratorium Committee pay tribute to the TIERRA band’s 50 years of music at our annual event slated for Saturday, August 27th, in Belvedere Park - East L.A.

The Salas family, led by Mr. Rudy Salas, Sr. and Margaret Salas, participated and led parents supporting the 1968 East L.A. Walkouts to demand better education, respect, and dignity in the schools. Moreover, the Salas elders were part of the original organizers of the Chicano Moratorium Committee (1969-70) with our chair emeritus, Rosalio Munoz & Gloria Arrellanes, and introduced E.L.A. youth to the Chicano Movement by educating their sons, Rudy Salas, Jr. & Steve Salas, to join in protest actions.

In August 2021, the 50th CMC presented the Rudy Salas, Jr. testimonial of August 29th (written by Rudy on August 28, 2020) and his original song “The Day They Killed Ruben at the Silver Dollar”, and, the memorial to Steve Salas (authored by the L.A. Times, 2022) summarizing the Salas Brothers history and music successes, on this 50th web site. In the spirit of the 2022 tribute to TIERRA and the Salas family, we post this video from the 48th celebration of TIERRA as recognition of the band’s place in our history, and as our invitation to join in a tribute performance on Saturday, August 27th, at Belvedere Park – East L.A.
